Project

After KLJ completed the Environmental Assessment, our team began the design process to extend Runway 12-30 at the Black Hills Airport/Clyde Ice Field nearly 1,000-feet. The extension project presented several unique challenges. Two important aspects of the project involved removal of 900 feet of Runway 30 to move the runway protection zone resolving issues with Interstate 90 and extending 1,800 feet of Runway 12 to achieve the overall design length of 6,400 feet. Work also included extensive geotechnical evaluation of embankment and excavation areas.

SOLUTION

The runway extension required full depth bituminous paving as well as geodetic survey control. Finish work for the existing portion of Runway 12-30 required bituminous overlay. Our team also provided coordination throughout the project, including the installation of a double 12-foot by 14-foot box culvert in False Bottom Creed to meet the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) 100-year floodplain requirements.

RESULTS:

KLJ was responsible for several complex project aspects, including relocating a portion of roads around the airfield improvements, surcharge of the extension area to expedite settlement and assisting with the acquisition of approximately 222 acres of land through the Federal Acquisition Process. Project work also involved installation of a new medium intensity runway light (MIRL) system, controls, and precision approach path indicators as well as construction surveying.
