PROJECT

The City of Vergas was awarded the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR) grant in 2019 to expand their walking trail system along Long Lake. The city wanted to enhance safety and access for pedestrians on an existing gravel trail on the east side of the lake.

SOLUTION

KLJ was hired to develop plans to overcome the space limitations within the A 10-foot wide asphalt trail was extended around the north side of the lake connecting the City Beach to the existing gravel trail on the east side of Long Lake. KLJ assisted the City be developing plans to overcome the space limitations in Tail County and right-of-way (ROW). In this area, Long Lake comes to the toe of the roadbed in slope and the existing roadway shoulder was not wide enough to safely provide a space for pedestrians.

RESULT

A 10-foot wide asphalt trail was extended around the north side of the lake connecting the City Beach to the existing gravel trail on the east side of Long Lake. Additionally, designed a walking trail transition from the city's beach area down to the lake by incorporating a retaining wall outside of the roadway clear zone to an eight-foot wide floating boardwalk. The floating boardwalk extends approximately 900 feet in which the trail transitions back to an asphalt trail that connects to the existing gravel trail. Several construction best management practices were incorporated into the design, which included the utilization of winter construction periods to limit potential pollutants entering the lake. The project enhanced overall pedestrian safety in this area.
