Minnesota Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS) and Transportation Alternatives (TA) Grants

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has announced the current grant process for SRTS and TA grants. SRTS funding supports school site improvements, pedestrian facilities, bicycle facilities, traffic calming, and crossing improvements. TA funding supports the planning, design and construction of on-road and off-road trail facilities for pedestrians, bicyclists, and nonmotorized forms of transportation including sidewalks, bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian and bicycle signals, traffic calming techniques, lighting and other safety-related infrastructure and transportation projects to achieve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Additionally, it can be utilized for conversion of abandoned railroad corridors, construction of turnouts, overlooks and viewing areas, environmental mitigation activities, and recreational trail projects.

Eligible Applicants: Local governments including cities, towns, townships, villages, boroughs, parishes or county agencies, regional transportation authorities, transit agencies, natural resource or public land agencies, including Tribes, States, local park or forest agencies, state or local fish, game or wildlife agencies, and DOI Land Management agencies, school districts, local education agencies or schools, and non-profit entities responsible for administration of local transportation safety programs.

Award Ceiling: SRTS funding maximum is $300,000. There is no specified maximum for TA projects.  

Match: 20 percent; however, there is a sliding scale resulting in a 10 percent match for some projects and no match for some SRTS projects
