PROJECT

In late 2021, KLJ was hired to provide engineering services to construct a tennis dome structure in Mandan, ND. The Mandan Park District and Mandan Tennis Center (MTC) envisioned an opportunity for tennis, pickleball, table tennis, and badminton enthusiasts to have an indoor venue in the city of Mandan. The goal was to provide a flexible facility that all ages could utilize and also help improve overall quality of life and further connect the community.

SOLUTION

The project is unique and unlike traditionally structured facilities. The inflatable dome design required less materials which helped with cost-effectiveness and was particularly useful in creating wide-open spaces for sporting events. The project faced multiple challenges including weather, firm deadlines, and manufacturing supply and distribution issues. Even with these challenges, KLJ was proud to meet and exceed the anticipated goals of both MTC and Mandan Parks and Recreation. The project design began in January 2022 and the MTC celebrated its completion and grand opening on December 22, 2022.

RESULT

KLJ performed site survey, land entitlements, development design, and site design services along with a stormwater analysis and design on this community-driven project. The dome consists of more than 41,000 square feet of new sports amenities including six tennis courts, ten pickleball courts, and a 3,000 square-foot Welcome Center equipped with retail space and a meeting room. The project also includes a vibrant Wall of Champions area in the entrance of the dome which celebrates past, local championship teams and individuals from Mandan High School and the West Region. KLJ, the City of Mandan, and Mandan Park and Recreation were recognized by Chapter 3 of the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers (NDSPE) for the Mandan Tennis Center project and earned the 2022 Project of the Year award.
