Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grants

The Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announces availability of SAFER grants which provide financial assistance to help fire departments increase frontline firefighters, rehire firefighters that have been laid off, retain firefighters facing imminent layoffs, or fill positions that were vacated through attrition. SAFER offers grants to support activities in two categories: 1) hiring of firefighters and 2) recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.

Eligible Applicants: City, town or county governments, or national, state, local or Tribal organizations and fire departments representing the interests of volunteer firefighters.

Match: There is no match requirement for SAFER Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters activity grants. Applicants of SAFER Hiring of Firefighter Activity grants are subject to a position cost limit and a cost share of 25 percent in years one and two and 65 percent in year three.

Award Ceiling: Total program funding is $345 million. There is no single award ceiling.
