Bismarck and Mobridge Airports Receive FAA Funding

Thanks to collaboration between KLJ and the Cities of Bismarck and Mobridge, both cities’ airports have been designated among 37 nationwide finalists to receive FAA supplemental funding. The funds will go toward the continuation of reconstruction and improvements for both airports.

In March 2018, the Consolidated Appropriations Act was signed, allowing the FAA to provide discretionary funds through their Supplement Funding Program, which aims to provide funding for selected regional, local, or basic nonprimary, nonmetropolitan airports. The Cities of Bismarck and Mobridge were identified as qualified applicants based on the FAA’s criteria.

KLJ has performed airport consulting for the City of Bismarck since 2009. Construction of the largest airport project that the City has undertaken, which consists of reconstructing their primary runway, began in 2017 and is scheduled to be completed by 2019. The supplemental funding will help pay for the third and final phase of the three-year project.

The City of Mobridge hired KLJ in April 2016 to complete survey, environmental clearance, design, and reconstruction for the Mobridge Municipal Airport’s runway, taxiway, and runway turnaround. It was evident that the scope of the project would exceed annual FAA entitlements, creating a need for additional funding.

KLJ prepared thorough applications and accompanying narratives for both Bismarck and Mobridge. It was announced in September that Bismarck Airport will receive $9.7 million in supplemental funding and the Mobridge Municipal Airport will receive nearly $4.1 million. To receive funding, applicants committed to commence work within six months of selection.
